Fishing
If you’re interested in game, coarse or sea fishing whilst on your holiday then pack your rod, it’s all nearby. Northumberland’s streams, rivers, reservoirs, lakes and coasts offer a wealth of fishing opportunities. The renowned Tweed offers first class river fishing, along with the Coquet, Aln and Till close by. Coarse fishing for pike, perch, and roach, is popular. Chatton offers still water trout fishing, only 4 miles away. Sea fishing is popular on the beautiful coastline of Northumberland, from shore or chartered boat. Whether it’s summer mackerel fishing on the rocks with the backdrop of Dunstanburgh castle or casting from the beach for cod or pollack at Bamburgh this is saltwater fishing at its best. Boats trips are available to venture further at locations including Seahouses and Craster.
Wildlife
The peaceful location of Hetton Hall is a natural home for Wildlife. Visitors to our campsite and gardens include hares, pheasant, partridges, deer with our resident red squirrels and owls. Bird lovers will be thrilled at seeing an abundance of wild birds including birds of prey and song birds such as bullfinches and yellow hammers. Nearby are the bird sanctuaries of Budle Bay and The Farne Islands. Seals adorn the Farne Islands along with the famous Puffins (nesting time during summer is a great spectacle.) For those lucky enough, dolphin are spotted regularly along the coast.
Cycling
The area is extremely popular with cyclist groups, and we can offer secure bike storage with prior agreement. We are on the route of The Sandstone Way, the 120 mile/193km mountain bike route from Berwick upon Tweed to Hexham. www.sandstoneway.co.uk. Of course, the location can be enjoyed with more leisurely rides with round-trips from the caravan site on the country lanes from only 7 miles, enjoying breath-taking views. Why not plan your route in advance with cycle-route planner www.cycle-route.com

Literally on the doorstep is St Cuthbert’s Way is a 62-mile (100 km) long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne (Holy Island.) St Cuthbert was a 7th century saint, buried in Holy Island. The cave used as a resting place along the way, affectionately known as Cuddy’s Cave by locals, can be seen from the grounds of Hetton Hall, and easily reached by foot. The walk offers beautiful views and can be enjoyed as shorter walks, along with the abundance of public footpaths in the area. For those wishing to complete a longer journey, we are ideally placed for an overnight stopover. St Cuthbert’s Way connects with other well-known walks such as The Pennine Way, St Oswald’s Way and the Northumberland Coast Path. In the Scottish borders, it connects with Borders Abbeys Way, the Roman Heritage Way, the Sir Walter Scott Way and the Southern Upland Way. Approximately 4 miles, from our site, is the village of Lowick where The Devil’s Causeway passes through. The causeway is a Roman road which […]
